Herbert Brenon nait à Dublin le 13 Janvier 1880. Il étudié à l'école St-Paul et au King College de Londres. Avant de devenir réalisateur, il a joué dans des pièces de vaudeville avec sa femme, Helen Oberg. C'est un metteur en scène important du muet jusque dans les années 1930. Certains de ses films sont en effet les premières adaptations cinématographiques : Peter Pan (1924), Beau Geste (1926), Gatsby le Magnifique, (1926), Sorrell and Son (1927) pour lequel il a été nominé pour l'Oscar du meilleur réalisateur dans la 1ère Cérémonie des Oscars, Ris donc, paillasse ! (1928) avec Lon Chaney, Sr., et La Brigade volante (1940), son dernier. Il est mort le 21 Juin 1958à Los Angeles.
